the opposite of opposite.
I recently finished THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA yesterday by Hemingway and I was thoroughly pleased with the novella. You're probably thinking "I read that my freshman year in high school", I don't care it was my first time. The novella takes you through the journey of a lonely old starving fisherman's life who begins to have a troubled time with not catching a notable fish in 85 days. Although having misfortune the old man fails to lose hope and decides to go into deeper waters on one particular day and hooks the largest marlin ever seen in Cuba. He fights and fights the fish for two and a half days and finally brings it in yet is sad to see this magnificent and beautiful creature die by his hands. He finds triumph in his feat of the marlin yet on his sail back home in his small skiff the scent of the dead marlin and dripping blood continue to attract sharks and with no strength left he is not able to fend them off the marlin on the side of the boat. Yet when he arrives home with only the marlins skeleton roped to the side of the skiff he is still satisfied with his journey and is sad of killing such a beautiful creature of the sea. This is why I love Hemingway, his characters always have such hope and through the whole novella you think hes going to catch the greatest fish. Which he does, and you think he's going to take it home and be a legend in the town. Yet Hemingway alters the story to have everything gained by the man taken from him yet the man is not mad nor angry. The happy ending wasn't there, but the noble ending was. I like noble. This made about no sense at all but I dont care. What really matters is go read good novels/novellas/etc. Read Hemingway, its quite the opposite of a wrong decision. Over and out.
